A Grade I listed building designed by Nash in the 1820s, The Royal Society’s facility at Carlton House Terrace underwent a major refurbishment and restoration. The library and reading room date back to 1890 and include panelled rooms and a spectacular artwork ceiling. Through the installation of new heating, cooling, lighting and audio-visual equipment, these areas were made suitable for visitors, seminars and receptions. The main project challenge was threading the new services through the historic fabric, often hidden behind ornately decorated and retained finishes. The works were undertaken while the remainder of the building was fully operational.
