20 years of defining projects

Marking 20 years of Knight Harwood gives us the chance to look back at projects that embody our values of quality, care, and excellence in delivery. Among them is the creation of a new home for the Library and Archive of the Church of England, located within the historic grounds of @visitlambethpalace.

This was a project of extraordinary sensitivity. Situated within a Grade II listed site of importance for nature conservation, and an area rich in archaeology, it demanded the highest standards of architectural and engineering excellence, alongside careful ecological protection.

The building safeguards the second-largest collection of religious texts in central Europe, designed to protect delicate manuscripts and archives from risks including fluctuating humidity, air pollution, and flooding.

Every aspect was shaped to balance preservation with a sense of sanctuary:

Seven above-ground storeys of archive space ensure secure, long-term storage.

A mezzanine-level reading room, entrance hall, and staff areas provide calm, functional environments for study and care of the collection.

Controlled views into the glade create moments of connection with nature, reinforcing the contemplative atmosphere.

The result is a building that both protects a globally important collection and enriches its setting, a timeless addition to one of London’s most historic sites.
